Academic Vocabulary Acquisition - STEMS
Prefix, Suffix, and Root learning
During this phase of the academic vocabulary acquisition, you will be memorizing some key stems and words that contain the stem. The prefixes, suffixes, and roots and not negotiable (listed below); however, the specific words are up to you to compile. THESE WORDS MUST BE AT OR ABOVE YOUR GRADE LEVEL! For example, choosing "bicycle" for the prefix bi- is not acceptable. You may choose from among the sample words provided with the stems lists (if they are at or above your grade level), or you may choose your own words. Please use this as an opportunity to learn some new words rather than taking the easy route.
The tests will occur in the following order: Prefix, Suffix, Greek Root, Latin Root, and all test dates will be listed on your calendar in advance. You will have roughly two weeks between tests.
The format of the tests will be as follows: multiple choice for the stems themselves; short answer for the words you self-select - you will need to enter the word, a definition (in your own words is acceptable), and an original sentence in which the definition of the word is clear and it's used grammatically correctly.
