Synthesizing sources into your argument
Phase one: Proposal
*Review your resources to determine a question on which you intend to form a position. At this point you have read two books, several shorter pieces, and several non-print sources. If you stayed within your selected theme, there should be a pattern among resources. However, you may certainly conduct additional research if needed to fully support your position. The specific number and type of sources is listed below.
*Create a bibliography of the resources you choose to support your position. These resources should reflect a variety of perspectives about your topic. You will need two paragraphs for each source: the first paragraph will essentially be a SOAPS analysis, and the second paragraph will briefly explain how this source applies to your selected position.
*You need six sources which will need to include a minimum of four print and two non-print sources. You must include your most recent book as one of your print sources. (Print, in this context, simply means a source comprised primarily of text. As opposed to non print, which would be a cartoon, ad, photo, chart, and the like.)
Phase two: Outline
You will use SOAPSTonE/SMELL to create an outline. Remember that with logic/line of reasoning (first L in SMELL), you will need to establish which argumentative method you intend to use (classical, Toulmin, or Rogerian), and with language (second L in SMELL) you will need to tell which appeals (ethos, logos, and pathos) you plan to build with your choices. In fact, you will need to justify all of your choices.
Phase three: Synthesis Essay
You will be synthesizing your resources into an argumentative research paper. You will need to decide how you feel about the topic. At this point you need to defend your position. Your argument must be paramount! You will simply use your sources as either support for your argument or to intentionally refute in order to show support for your argument. You will need to weave in a minimum of five of your ancillary sources. This paper will need to be roughly 4-6 pages in length.
You will use APA formatting for this paper. These links will be helpful with APA formatting.
