Thematic Focus
Over the course of this year you will be choosing texts to read and analyze for a variety of purposes. Before you choose any texts, however, you will need to choose a theme to connect your choices. By the end of the year you will have two nonfiction books, five - ten short nonfiction pieces (letters, speeches, etc.), and five - ten non-print pieces (editorial cartoons, advertisements, etc.) that you will synthesize into an argument.
THEMES: Choose one of the following themes to focus your selections.
1) Leadership, politics, and economy
2) Race, class, and gender
3) Earth, science, and technology
As you can see, these themes are very broad in nature, so you can tailor the theme to your particular interests, but choose wisely because once you choose, you cannot change. Once you've selected your theme you will also need to select your first nonfiction out of class read.
